Resume Writing Made Easy
By Carl DiNello
It's no secret that your resume can unquestionably make or break your
job application. That is why there are so many articles, books, and
consultants available to offer a job-seeker all that is essential to
write a winning resume. However, it is not necessary to search long
and hard to find the definitive resume writing guide. Just follow the
simple steps below and you will successfully compose a comprehensive
and enticing resume that may help land that job you've always dreamt
of.
1. Personal Information - This should be obvious. Your resume should
contain your name, address, and phone number. If you are a student, an
on-campus address as well as a permanent address should be provided.
If possible, include a photograph when writing your resume.
2. Professional Objective - Your objective is an important part of
resume writing. It provides relevant information to the recruitment
department about the specific job being applied for, so that resumes
may be sorted accordingly. In addition, your professional objective
provides a short but concise description of your potential "fit" to
not only the job opening, but the employing company. If you are a new
college graduate, be certain to avoid an objective that is too vague
and does not express realistic expectations. This is a typical error
many new college graduates make when writing a resume.
3. Educational Qualifications - Make sure to include all the important
information regarding your college major, date of graduation, grade
point average, and the name of the educational institution. To save
space, exclude primary and secondary education in your resume writing
unless it represents the last educational experience you have had.
4. Work Experience - For an employer who is seeking specific
job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities in an applicant, this
work experience section is invaluable. Detailed and extensive work
experience data must be included in writing your resume: dates of
employment, employing companies, positions held, military experience,
and anything else that will help qualify you for the job you are
seeking. Despite its importance, and relevance to employers, including
extensive experience may result in a resume that is longer than
preferred. Depending on the level and type of job, balance the amount
of experience included with the length of your resume.
5. Achievements - Employers and recruitment staff are always looking
for instances where an applicant has been recognized for previous
accomplishments in the form of honors and awards. So, when writing
your resume, be sure to include any of these achievements from both
college and work. To an employer, achievements indicate such skills as
leadership, organization, communication, and teamwork. As with work
experience, balance resume length with the benefits of mentioning the
awards.
6. References - Whether or not to include a references section when
writing your resume is a matter of choice. If overall resume length is
a concern, you may omit the detail in this section and use the
statement, "references available on request." Should the employer
require you to provide references you can attach a separate reference
page that includes the name, address, and phone number of three to
five referrers.
7. Cover Letter - In the submission of your resume, a cover letter
will be the first thing that the employer will view, and yet when
writing your resume, the cover letter is the last part you complete.
Why? Because the purpose of the cover letter is to introduce your
resume and summarize its key points. Your resume must be completed
before a good cover letter can be written. Your cover letter must
express which job you are interested in, how you learned of the
opening, and what you think you can offer the organization. The cover
letter and resume are a packaged presentation, and attention to the
resume at the expense of the letter may prove costly to your job
prospects.
So there it is; resume writing make simple. Just follow these simple
steps and you will be ready to start your career search and write your
unbeatable resume with ease!
